The London Met Disabilities and Dyslexia Service (DDS) offers advice, information and support for students with a disability, a Specific Learning Difficulty (SpLD) such as Dyslexia or Dyspraxia, students who are Deaf or hard of hearing, blind or partially sighted students, students with chronic long-term health conditions and students with mental health difficulties.

Covid-19: DDS Operational Update
Please check the DDS website regularly for operational updates.
During the switch to online teaching, DDS will operate remotely to ensure that we continue to provide the information, guidance and support that our service offers.
Remote operations will commence on Wednesday 18th March and will continue until further notice. Please note, DDS will not be offering on-campus meetings or drop-in sessions while campus access is paused.

Video Appointments - MS Teams
DDS will continue to offer face-to-face appointments with Disability Advisors but these will operate virtually via the MS Teams platform (video conferencing software). We ask students wishing to have a video conference appointment to download MS Teams to their personal computers or mobile devices. Further information concerning the installation and operation of MS Teams can be found on the webpages below:

Q: How can I contact the DDS while the London Met buildings are closed?
You can contact DDS either by email at email@example.com or phoning 020 7133 2188. If you already have an advisor then you can email them directly should you have any. All enquiries will be answered within a period of five working days.
Q: Do I still need to get supporting medical evidence for my disability, health condition or mental health condition?
Yes, but please be aware that GP's, Consultants and other NHS professionals may only be replying to emergency situations and queries at present. If you have any concerns about getting medical evidence please contact us by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or phoning 020 7133 2188.
Q: How do I obtain a dyslexia or Specific Learning Difficulty (SpLD) diagnosis?
At present we are not offering screenings for dyslexia or specific learning difficulties. If you would like to obtain a full diagnosis, then you may be able to get this yourself by contacting an external diagnostician. Q: How can I register for support with DDS?
You can still register with DDS for support. In order to register with us please send us a copy of your medical evidence / diagnostic report to firstname.lastname@example.org in order to book an appointment. You can also phone us on 020 7133 2188.
Q: Can I still apply for Disabled Students' Allowances (DSA)?
Yes. You are still able to apply for DSA while the university is online. This can be done through the Student Finance website here: https://www.gov.uk/disabled-students-allowances-dsas/how-to-claim
Q: How long will it take for me to receive my Disabled Students' Allowances (DSA) entitlement?
As the DSA is administered by Student Finance, we (the DDS) have no control on how long it will take for your support to be confirmed. It may however take longer than average during the current period. Should you have any concerns about being without support then please contact us at email@example.com or 020 7133 2188.
Q: Can I still have an appointment with the DDS while I am studying online?
Yes. We are still operating appointments over the phone or by video. To arrange an appointment then please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org or 020 7133 2188.
In order to have a video appointment, you will need to ensure that you have access to MS Teams as we will use this to contact you.

Q: What is happening regarding exams?

Q: What can I do if I want to update my INAR?
To update your INAR please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org or by phoning us on 020 7133 2188 in order to arrange a phone or video appointment in order to discuss this further with you.
Q: I need support to help me with my classes online. What can I do?
If you feel that you are not able to fully access your online learning due to disability-related barriers then please contact us in order to discuss the difficulties that you are having and possible support you could benefit from. If you are struggling to access your course due to IT-related factors then please contact your course tutors.
Q: Can I still access my Study Skills and/or Mental Health Mentoring support?
Yes. If you have SpLD Study Skills or mental health mentoring support where it is appropriate to do so, sessions can be provided remotely. You will need to contact your provider to check if this is possible but London Met has been in touch with many of the key providers and they have indicated that they are continuing to support students remotely.
Q: Can Study Skills and/or Mental Health Mentoring support be carried out by email?
No. The DSA funding bodies do not think that it is possible to provide effective support via email. It is acceptable to provide this support over the phone or via a video call.
Q: Will the DSA authorise additional sessions of 1-2-1 specialist mentor support for students whose mental health is impacted by the current situation?
No. The role of a specialist mentor is to help students address the barriers to learning created by their condition. It is not appropriate for specialist mentors to be providing mental health support to students as this is not something which falls under the remit of the DSA.
Q: I am new to study skills support and have a question(s) that I want to ask. Who do I contact?
If you have never had a Study Skills session before and have some questions then feel free to contact our Study Skills Tutor at firstname.lastname@example.org with your queries and we will get back to you within 5 working days to explain things further to you or answer your questions.
Q: What additional support is available for me?
There is a range of assistive apps which are available for free on both Apple and Android. More information on these can be found on the DDS webpage - Make the most of IT.
Additionally, DDS will also be looking to offer some additional forms of support in the future so keep checking the DDS webpage for more information.
Q: I struggle with accessing the supermarket due to a disability or mental health condition. How can I get key resources?
Many supermarkets in the UK are now introducing priority hours at the start of the day for over 70s and those with disabilities to get key food and purchases. This is also being extended to online shopping. More information on this can be found below:
Some supermarkets are also placing restrictions on the maximum number of each product that people can buy in order to prevent stock from running out.
Q: How do I register with a GP?
To find your nearest GP take a look at the NHS Find a GP website and enter your postcode. This site will also tell you how you can contact and register with a GP
Q: How can I get access to my medication?
To ensure that you have access to all of your key medications, many pharmacies are able to offer online repeat prescription processing and home delivery. Boots is one of the main pharmacies that offer this service nationwide. See the Boots website for more information.
What we provide
- Bespoke, informed, professional guidance and ongoing advice for students and prospective students with a range of disabilities, SpLDs and medical conditions
- Screenings and advice to students wishing to investigate whether they may have an SpLD
- Referral for a diagnostic assessment where appropriate
- Recommendations for reasonable adjustments, in line with the Equality Act (2010) in order to ensure that students are enabled to participate as fully as possible in the academic and social life of the University. This can include adjustments to arrangements for teaching, examinations, the physical environment and methods of communication
- Assistance with setting up non-medical help (such as note-takers, campus support, mentors, interpreters and SpLD one-to-one support)
- Advice and guidance on the funding available to disabled students (such as the Disabled Students' Allowance and funding for disabled EU and International students)
- Tailored training, advice and guidance for staff supporting disabled students
Discussing your needs
London Met makes anticipatory adjustments where possible (eg in course design and by improving access to buildings) but we understand that everyone's needs are different. Therefore once you have received your offer of a place you should register with DDS as soon as possible to help us ensure we have got all the support you might require for the start of your course.
We need you to provide medical evidence of your condition in order for us to assess the appropriate support. All evidence must be in written English or transcribed by a certified transcription service and authenticated as such.
|For disabilities, Deaf or hard-of-hearing students, blind or partially sighted students, and students with a chronic long-term health/mental health condition.||
|For Specific Learning Difficulties (eg Dyslexia or Dyspraxia).||A report, produced since you were age 16, from an Educational Psychologist or Specialist Teacher Assessor.
Information relating to physical or mental health constitutes sensitive personal data. Under the Data Protection Act (1998), explicit permission from the data subject (ie the student) must be sought before this type of information is passed on to a third party unless there is a legal obligation to provide the information. Please ask your Disabilities and Dyslexia Adviser if you have any questions concerning the data we keep or the terms of the Data Protection Act. Please note that we will not speak to your parents/legal guardian about you without your express written permission.
Who will you share my information with?
DDS may need to disclose information about your disability with certain people in order to help support you. This information will only be shared where necessary and on a 'need to know' basis. We define 'need to know' as sharing sufficient information to help set up support and only with people involved in that process. We always ask that the people with whom we share your information respect your confidentiality and do not pass your information onto anyone else unless they are also involved in your support.
Those with whom the DDS may share your information can include (but is not strictly limited to): your Diversity Coordinators, Personal Academic Tutors, the Examinations Office, your School and funding body. DDS may also share student data with other university departments, such as the Careers Service, for recruitment, statistics, and monitoring purposes.
DDS may also need to request and/or share further information about your additional support needs from individuals and/or agencies outside of the University such as your GP, Consultant, Mental Health Support Team, Educational Psychologist, previous education provider, or funding body (eg Student Finance England) where appropriate. This is in order to ensure we are able to support you whilst studying at university. We respect your confidentiality and assure you that any information shared will be handled in a sensitive and discreet manner.
The Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA)
The Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA) from Student Finance England can help to pay for the extra costs you may incur as a direct result of your disability, Specific Learning Difficulties, chronic long-term health condition or mental health difficulty. DSAs are paid on top of your Student Finance and do not have to be repaid. The allowance can help with the cost of having a person to support you, such as a note-taker or specialist tutor; items of specialist equipment; travel and other course-related costs. DSAs cover the cost of specialist equipment and support and do not have to be repaid. They are non-means tested and will be in addition to your Student Finance. Most full-time and part-time students who satisfy the eligibility criteria for obtaining 'Home' funding from Student Finance England should be eligible to apply for DSA. 'Home-status' postgraduate students may also be eligible.
For students who are ineligible for the DSA, such as international students, please contact the DDS when you are thinking of applying to London Met so we can discuss possible sources of disability-related funding.
Applying for DSA
You should apply for DSA as soon as possible, ideally before you start your course. You will need to complete an application form and send this to the relevant funding body along with the appropriate evidence confirming your disability. They will then reply to confirm whether you are eligible.
If you are eligible you will be asked to attend a DSA Needs Assessment at a DSA Assessment Centre (see below for further information).
After you have attended your DSA Needs Assessment a report will be sent to your funding body who will subsequently write to confirm what they will fund. Once you receive this letter, you can order equipment and organise specialist support.

Finding a DSA Assessment Centre
The service previously available on the DSA-QAG website that enabled individuals to locate a DSA Assessment Centre has now closed. For convenience, London Met students are able to attend their DSA Assessment with a company called 'Contact Associates' at either the Aldgate or Holloway Road campus.

Diagnostic testing for dyslexia
Dyslexia is a Specific Learning Difficulty (SpLD) which mainly affects reading and spelling ability. There is a range of support available for students with a Specific Learning Difficulty at London Met. The DDS offers students a free computer-based screening test and can refer students to an Educational Psychologist for a full diagnostic assessment. Read our three-step SpLD assessment process .

Cancelled and missed appointments
DDS appointments are in high demand. If you can't make your appointment, contact DDS in advance to cancel so we can offer the appointment slot to another student.
If you repeatedly miss appointments without cancelling, your use of the service may be terminated.
Where can you meet an adviser?
We have appointments Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. DDS is currently offering telephone and video appointments in accordance with Covid-19 social distancing requirements.
What will happen during my first appointment?
Your DDS Adviser will talk to you about how your disability or difficulty impacts on your studies. The adviser will go through your documentary evidence and suggest appropriate adjustments for your studies. Your DDS Adviser can help you apply for and organise Disabled Students' Allowances. You may also be referred for a dyslexia screening test or to another service within the university. Appointments are booked for 1 hour. If you need more time to discuss your university adjustments, you may need to rebook for another day.
Students are expected to interact with all staff members in a respectful and honest way in accordance with the University's Student Conduct requirements. Bad language, threatening behaviour and raised voices will not be tolerated and may result in the termination of your use this service.
DDS offers drop-in sessions for students who have queries and questions that do not require an in-depth meeting.
Note: DDS drop-in sessions are currently suspended in line with Covid-19 social distancing requirements. This service will resume as soon as possible.

Drop-in sessions are time-limited to 20 minutes and appointments are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. If your query requires a meeting longer than 20 minutes your details will be taken and a suitable appointment will be made in due course.
If you would like to attend a drop-in session please come to Reception at Holloway Road Campus on the day of your choice. Using the Qudini booking system, reserve a drop-in slot, or speak with staff for assistance. To avoid disappointment, we advise students to reserve their drop-in slot as early as possible. Drop-in slots can only be booked on the day.
Note: Students that arrive more than 5 minutes late for drop-in appointments will need to re-book at a later date.
