UCU Industrial Action
You will have received an email on Monday 30 March at 2pm with an important update from the Dean of your School regarding planned strike action. Please read this email for information specific to your School. Below you will find general information about proposed strike action at London Metropolitan University.
The University College Union (UCU) has notified the University of a period of industrial action, scheduled to take place over seven days from mid-April, coinciding with your return from the Easter break.
The dates of planned industrial action are:
- Wednesday 15 April
- Thursday 16 April
- Tuesday 21 April
- Wednesday 22 April
- Thursday 23 April
- Monday 27 April
- Tuesday 28 April
This industrial action is in response to the proposed changes (restructuring) in the School. You were updated about these last month via the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost, Nona McDuff’s all-student email and through local briefings.
Some of your scheduled teaching sessions in your school may be affected during this period. We are working to keep disruption to a minimum and will keep you updated. We know how important your studies are, and we want to ensure you feel informed and supported throughout.
What this means for your studies
During periods of industrial action, staff are not required to inform the University in advance of their intention to take part. While we may invite colleagues to notify us, they are entitled to decline. As a result, we may not always know ahead of time whether a scheduled module or teaching session will be disrupted until the day it is due to take place. Some tutors may choose to let their students know in advance if they plan to participate, but this is at their discretion.
Where we do receive advance notice of staff participation, we will aim to put alternative arrangements in place. This may include finding cover for your session, delivering the material in an alternative format, or arranging a different learning experience for you. Your Heads of Subject and Principal Lecturers will keep you updated with any further information specific to your modules.
Where we have been unable to provide cover for a session, or deliver it in an alternative format, we will confirm the arrangements with you as soon as possible.
Assessments and submissions
If you are concerned that industrial action may affect your ability to meet an assessment deadline or attend an exam, you can use the University’s mitigating circumstances for support. Further information can be found on the Mitigating Circumstances page.
Important reminder for students applying for mitigating circumstances:
- Students due to graduate this academic year: If your mitigating circumstances claim is accepted, you will be given a later hand-in date. Please note that this means you will not attend graduation in July and will instead be invited to our winter graduation, which normally takes place in December.
- Students in the UK on a Tier 4 or Student Visa: You should seek advice from the International Advice Service, as any changes to your programme resulting from an accepted mitigating circumstances claim may have an impact on your visa.
How we will keep you updated
We will provide further updates during this period. In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Student Zone.
Thank you for your patience and understanding. We’ll keep you updated and will do everything we can to support you during this period.
