Drop-in Appointments

Drop-in appointments are short, 20-minute sessions designed to give you space for a helpful conversation, explore what is causing difficulty or distress, and agree on the next best steps.

Beginning week commencing 13 October 2025, there will be no booking needed. Sessions run on a first come, first served basis every:

  • Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday

  • 10am to 1pm (last appointment 12.30pm)

  • Location: Holloway Road, First Floor, Red Zone, TM1-33

We will see as many students as possible during each drop-in. However, at busy times not everyone may be seen. If that happens, you will be encouraged to:

  • attend another drop-in at a time that works for you, and/or

  • book a Single Session Therapy appointment by completing the Counselling Registration Form.

This helps us manage demand fairly, while making sure you still have a clear route to support.

  • a one-off 20-minute appointment with a member of the Counselling team
  • for any student experiencing emotional, psychological, or mental health difficulties but are unsure of what, where or how to gain support and feel the need to talk to someone quickly.
  • available in person at Student Services TM1-33

Appointments are for 20 minutes with a member of the Counselling team, and you will work together to explore the issue(s) that are causing difficulty or distress and identify the most appropriate advice, guidance or signposting to support. By the end of the appointment, you will have a clear idea of the best next steps to take, which may include:

  • trying self-help resources
  • applying for support through one-to-one counselling
  • support from within your school or wider University student support services
  • recommendation to make an appointment with your GP or advice and guidance about community-based support services.

If you already know that you want to access support through the Student Counselling Service, then you should complete the counselling registration form. A hyperlink for this can be found below:

If you would like to book a drop-in appointment, no booking needed. Just come along on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays at Holloway Campus, TM1-33 (Student Zone), between 10am to 1pm (last appointment 12.30pm), during term time.

You will need to book the appointment upon arrival via QMinder.

During your drop-in session, the counsellor will ask you for some brief details to make sure we can support you effectively:

  • Full Name

  • Student ID Number

  • Contact Telephone Number

  • What is the Presenting Issue (in your own words, what has brought you to the service today)

  • What is the Goal for the Session (what you would like to get out of the appointment)

The counsellor will then work with you to explore your concerns and may share:

  • Key Interventions or Strategies (practical tools, coping strategies, or insights)

  • Referrals or Signposting (if specialist or ongoing support is needed)

  • Outcome Summary (a short overview of what was discussed and agreed)

This approach ensures each session is focused, practical, and tailored to your needs

Please note: the Counselling Service is not an emergency or crisis service. Our focus is on short-term, practical support. If you ever need urgent help, we will guide you to appropriate emergency or specialist services. We cannot provide supporting evidence towards Mitigating Circumstances applications based on this meeting.
