Car Free Day
Where: Across the London
When: 22 September
The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has announced that a central London Car Free Day event will return on Sunday 20 September as part of his bold plans to tackle London’s toxic air.
Car Free Day is celebrated across the world on 22 September. It encourages motorists to choose alternative travel such as walking and cycling or public transport, instead of using their car for the day.
Hop on your own bike or hire a Santander Cycle for free on 22 September by using the code CFD2020 with the Santander Cycles app or directly at the dock. Or commit to changing your commute this year with 25% off your annual membership using the code CFD25OFF upon purchase on 22 or 23 September.
Remember to share your active day out with #MyCarFreeTrip for a chance to win prizes from GoPro, Brompton and more.
Recycle Week
Where: Across UK
When: 21 - 27 September
This years theme for Recycle Week is: 'Thanking the nation: 'Together - We Recycle'
Now in its 17th year, Recycle Week is a celebration of recycling, organised by WRAP under the Recycle Now brand. This year, the theme will thank the nation for continuing to recycle despite the challenges that COVID-19 has presented, under the banner 'Together - We Recycle'.
We want Recycle Week 2020 to recognise the sacrifices that key workers and citizens have made to keep recycling going and create positive change in the world around us. Our recycling and waste key workers have heroically carried on collecting while the world slowed down around them.
There are many ways for you as an individual to get involved with the campaign, including:
- Using #RecycleWeek and #GreenLondonMet on social media
- Signing up to the Recycle Week 2020 E-newsletter
- Explore how recycling will look like when you return on campus

Food Waste Action Week - 1 to 7 March
Food Waste Action Week is being delivered through Love Food Hate Waste to mitigate the devastating impact food waste has on the planet. When it comes to food waste at home, UK households produce around 70 per cent of the UK’s 9.5 million tonnes of food waste every year. To tackle this, Love Food Hate Waste and TV cook Nadiya Hussain will ask people to take part in the Food Waste Action Week Challenge to make sure no edible food ends up in the bin. It is a week of activities offering tips and tricks to cut waste.
To take part in the Food Waste Action Week Challenge, share your top tips on Instagram using #FoodWasteActionChallenge and @lfhw_uk, from storing food, using up leftovers and making sure none of it ends up in the bin. Use #GreenLondonMet and @GreenLondonMet so we can share your posts!
Green Week - 15 to 19 March
Over the five days, our Sustainability Team will deliver a range of lunchtime sustainability talks with partners from Paper Round, SOS-UK, Rewild My Street, The Conservation Volunteers, The Octopus Community Network, NLWA plus students and staff.
