There are many UK and international learned and professional bodies that offer membership and networking opportunities in criminology and related fields. The list below only gives the key ones.

  • British Society of Criminology
This is a professional body that you can join as a student or when you’re working in the profession. One of the Society’s aims is to advance the knowledge of academics and professionals in the fields of crime, criminal behaviour and the criminal justice systems in the UK.
  • College of Policing
This is an accrediting body of some of the courses in this subject area and is the professional body for those who work for the police service in England and Wales.

Other academic libraries with relevant materials can be accessed via the SCONUL Access Scheme.

  • British Library
Access to material unavailable elsewhere. The British Library has a growing collection of e-resources now available within the reading rooms. Certain forms of ID are needed to register for a reader pass. See the website for further details.
  • Radzinowicz Library, Institute of Criminology, University of Cambridge
Home to the most comprehensive criminology collection in the UK. Visits allowed only by arrangement. I would expect that this would only be appropriate for students at postgraduate level. See website for contact details.

  • GOV.UK
Find government services and information, including publications.
  • Legislation.gov.uk
Find and access UK government legislation.
  • NPCC National Police Chiefs' Council
The NPCC brings UK police forces together to help policing to coordinate operations, adapt and reform as crime continues to evolve. The Council also works with the College of Policing on developing national strategies. You can view the Council’s publications, as well as the latest policing news via this website.
  • Policing and Community Safety Partnerships
These partnerships are local bodies comprised of Councillors and independent people from each council area. They work towards making communities safer. More details are available on the website.
