Guidance for students observing Ramadan

Ramadan is a meaningful time, but balancing fasting, studies and daily life can be challenging. London Metropolitan University recognises religion and belief as a protected characteristic and is aware that fasting may have an impact upon students' preparation for coursework and revision. Students observing fast alongside academic studies can find helpful information and guidance in the NHS supported Ramadan Health Guide.

Students can connect with the Muslim community through the Islamic Society at the Students' Union.

We have multi-faith rooms available for reflection, meditation and prayer at each of our campuses which are open to all students and staff during our normal building opening hours.

For more information see our multi-faith prayer room webpage.

Revision

  • Start revision early.
  • Take regular breaks from your screen.
  • Get some fresh air.
  • Try revising at different times of the day.
  • Take a nap in the day when you can.

Nutrition

  • Pack in the protein.
  • Avoid overindulging at iftar.
  • Drink lots of water between iftar and suhoor.
  • Try coconut water - it's good for hydration and headaches.
  • Limit the fried and sugary foods.
  • Avoid salty food (they can make you thirsty).
  • Eat foods encouraged in the Sunnah.

Spiritual and well being

  • Set some realistic goals for Ramadhan
  • Remember that your work / study can be an act of ibadah (worship) with the right intention
  • Work hard and then pray for your success (this is the month of acceptance).
  • Stay positive.
  • Get outside when you can.
  • Host an iftar.
  • Don't be afraid to ask for help

Last year, students on TalkCampus supported each other by sharing fasting tips, and favourite recipes, and many found motivation and advice when things got tough - whether it was keeping up energy while studying, adjusting sleep schedules for Suhoor and Iftar, or simply finding comfort in shared experiences.

If you're looking for a space to connect, reflect, or talk to someone who gets it, TalkCampus is here for you. You don't have to do it alone. You can sign up to TalkCampus using your London Met email address. TalkCampus is anonymous and we won't know that you're using it.

Our three specialist Student Services Teams provide advice and guidance to all London Met students. For more information concerning this, please see our team web pages:
